The newly reopened Carl Barron Plaza in Central Square, Cambridge will host free community events throughout fall 2026, including live music, DJs, wellness activities, community resources, coffee pop-ups, dance and the FOUND Vintage Market.
Carl Barron Plaza is entering a new chapter.
Following the reopening of the newly redesigned public space in the heart of Central Square, Cambridge, the Central Square Business Improvement District is launching a season of recurring Carl Barron Plaza events and programming designed to bring activity, connection, culture and community to the plaza throughout the week.
We're calling it Under the Ribbon.
Beginning in October 2026, visitors to Carl Barron Plaza can expect a rotating schedule of free events in Central Square, including wellness activities, community resources, live performances, DJs presented by Central On Air, coffee, dance and a Saturday vintage market.
The idea is simple: create more reasons to stop, stay and spend time in Central Square.
What's New at Carl Barron Plaza?
Located at 632 Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square, Carl Barron Plaza has undergone a major redesign as part of Cambridge's River Street Infrastructure and Streetscape Project.
The City of Cambridge will celebrate the reopening of Carl Barron Plaza with a ribbon cutting on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 2–4 PM. The redesigned plaza includes more seating, new trees and landscaping, improved lighting and accessibility, upgraded transit amenities and new infrastructure for gathering and public programming.
One of the plaza's most visible new features is The Ribbon, a sculptural structure that moves through the space and serves multiple purposes, including seating, lighting, public art and a stage for performances and community activity. The structure features Riparian Ribbon, artwork by Cambridge artist Sophy Tuttle inspired by the ecology of the Charles River.
That feature also inspired the name for our new programming series:
Under the Ribbon.
Carl Barron Plaza Fall 2026 Event Schedule
Rather than programming Carl Barron Plaza only for occasional large events, the fall schedule establishes a recurring weekly rhythm.
Visitors will be able to come to the plaza on different days and experience something different.

Programming will continue throughout fall 2026, with new partners, events and seasonal activities added along the way.
