As part of our The World Lives Here series, we sat down with Peter, Executive Director of The Dance Complex, to talk about the importance of creating physical spaces where artists and communities can gather, create, and feel at home.

For decades, The Dance Complex has been more than a place to dance. It is a space where artists teach and experiment, where traditions are actively practiced and shared, and where people from different backgrounds find connection through movement.

Institutions like The Dance Complex are also essential to the vitality of Central Square. They bring people into the neighborhood, activate Mass Ave, support surrounding businesses, and help preserve the cultural identity that makes the Square distinct.

As Central Square continues to grow and evolve, protecting spaces for creativity must remain part of that future. Peter’s perspective reminds us that cultural preservation and economic development are not competing priorities. Strong neighborhoods need both.
